III Festival de Música Popular Brasileira (TV Record)

Held at the Teatro Record in São Paulo and broadcast by TV Record, the third Festival de Música Popular Brasileira ran from late September to October 21, 1967, and became the launchpad of Tropicália. Caetano Veloso entered 'Alegria, Alegria' with a rock band and Gilberto Gil presented 'Domingo no Parque' with Os Mutantes, while Edu Lobo's 'Ponteio' won. The electric guitars and clashing reactions made it the festival's most consequential edition.

Connections1

  • migrated from The Bahian circle in Salvador

The Bahian artists who formed their circle in Salvador carried their ideas south to São Paulo, where the 1967 TV Record festival gave Tropicália its national stage. The move from the Recôncavo to the television studios of the Southeast is the movement's defining migration. Salvador supplied the people; São Paulo supplied the detonator.
