Chris Cornell
The singer and guitarist of Soundgarden, possessed of a near-four-octave range that set him apart from the scene's rougher voices. Cornell also led the 1990 tribute project Temple of the Dog, which gathered musicians who would soon form Pearl Jam, knitting two of the city's biggest bands together. His commanding presence helped define grunge's vocal ambition beyond its garage-rock roots.

In 1990 Chris Cornell of Soundgarden assembled Temple of the Dog, a tribute project whose lineup included the musicians who would form Pearl Jam alongside singer Eddie Vedder. The session effectively introduced Vedder to the city's circle and knitted two of Seattle's biggest bands into one extended family. It is the clearest personal thread linking Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.
