Basic Channel

Founded in Berlin in 1993 by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, Basic Channel was a duo and a label that fused techno's machine pulse with the depth and decay of Jamaican dub. Their nearly anonymous releases, pressed loud and cut for the dancefloor, created the template for what became known as dub techno. The project linked Berlin's sound directly to the lineage of Detroit and Kingston alike.

Connections4

  • collaborates with Moritz von Oswald

Moritz von Oswald joined Mark Ernestus to form Basic Channel in 1993, pairing von Oswald's studio craft with Ernestus's deep knowledge of dub and Detroit imports. Their partnership turned the recording studio into the instrument of a new, submerged techno. Together they authored the city's most influential sound.

  • collaborates with Mark Ernestus

Mark Ernestus co-founded Basic Channel and ran it out of the orbit of his Hard Wax record shop. His ear for dub and his access to the latest Detroit and Jamaican records shaped the project from the start.

  • influences Maurizio

The same duo behind Basic Channel adopted the Maurizio alias to issue warmer, more dancefloor-focused records on their own label. Maurizio carried the Basic Channel method into a more rhythmic, club-ready form. The two names mark two faces of a single Berlin project.

  • collaborates with Phylyps Trak (Basic Channel EP)

Basic Channel released Phylyps Trak in 1993 as one of the early statements of their dub-techno method. Its long, slowly shifting loops became a cornerstone of the deep Berlin sound.
