Return to Brazil
In 1972, judging the political climate marginally safer, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil returned to Brazil from London, carrying the rock, reggae, and studio ideas absorbed abroad. Their homecoming reopened a creative channel that the dictatorship had tried to sever and seeded the music of the decade that followed. Tropicália did not resume as a movement, but its makers had been permanently transformed.
