Nevermind (Nirvana)
Nirvana's second album, released on 24 September 1991, the record that pulled grunge out of the underground and into the global mainstream. Cleaner and more melodic than "Bleach," it paired punk energy with radio-ready hooks and the propulsive single "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Its unexpected commercial success reordered the priorities of the entire music industry almost overnight.

influenced by → Superfuzz Bigmuff (EP)
Mudhoney's 1988 EP helped codify the distorted, abrasive template that Nirvana would later carry to a mass audience with "Nevermind." The earlier record marked out the scene's aesthetic; the later one sold it to the world. The line from one Sub Pop release to the breakthrough album traces grunge's path from underground to mainstream.
