West End Blues

Built on a King Oliver theme and recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1928, 'West End Blues' is widely regarded as one of the supreme performances of early jazz. Its unaccompanied opening trumpet cadenza announced a new expressive scale for the music, and the wordless vocal and closing chorus deepened that statement. The recording stands as a summit of the New Orleans line as it reached full artistic maturity in Chicago.
