Sidney Bechet

A New Orleans clarinetist who adopted the soprano saxophone, Sidney Bechet was one of the first jazz musicians celebrated chiefly as a soloist. His wide, urgent vibrato and singing tone gave the horn an almost vocal presence, and his early-1920s recordings rank among the music's first virtuoso statements. He spent much of his career in Europe, where his playing helped carry New Orleans jazz to audiences far from its birthplace.
