Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers

The Red Hot Peppers was the recording band Jelly Roll Morton led from 1926 to 1930, a studio group assembled to realize his carefully plotted arrangements. Across sessions in Chicago they cut some of the most polished New Orleans-style records of the decade, alternating written ensemble passages with space for individual voices. The band is often held up as proof that early jazz could be composed as well as improvised.
