King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band
Led by cornetist King Oliver, the Creole Jazz Band became the defining New Orleans ensemble of early-1920s Chicago, holding court at the Lincoln Gardens dance hall. Its lineup gathered Louis Armstrong on second cornet, the brothers Johnny and Baby Dodds, trombonist Honoré Dutrey, and pianist Lil Hardin. The band's tightly interwoven counterpoint and famous two-cornet breaks made its 1923 records a foundational text of the music.
