King Oliver's 1923 recording sessions
In 1923 King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, with Louis Armstrong on second cornet, made a series of recordings that count among the first major documents of New Orleans ensemble jazz. Sides such as 'Dippermouth Blues' preserved the band's interlocking counterpoint and famous cornet breaks for study and imitation. These sessions are a foundational point at which the live New Orleans sound became durable, repeatable record.
