Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash auditioned for Sam Phillips in Memphis and, with the spare backing of the Tennessee Two, cut 'Cry! Cry! Cry!' and then 'Folsom Prison Blues' in 1955. His deep voice and the stark boom-chicka rhythm set him slightly apart from the studio's wilder rockabilly acts. Though he leaned toward country, his Sun years placed him squarely inside the Memphis circle. He was present at the December 1956 jam that became the Million Dollar Quartet.
