Kurtis Blow

Born Kurtis Walker in New York in 1959, Kurtis Blow became the first rapper signed to a major label when Mercury released his work in 1979. His 1980 single "The Breaks" was among the earliest rap records certified gold, proving the music had a durable commercial audience. He helped move rap from independent twelve-inch singles into the mainstream record industry.
