1520 Sedgwick Avenue

An apartment building in the West Bronx completed in 1967, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is celebrated as a birthplace of hip-hop because its recreation room hosted DJ Kool Herc's parties in 1973. The modest community space, rather than a famous club, was where the breakbeat technique first reached a crowd of dancers. The address has since become a place of pilgrimage for the culture.
