"The Girl from Ipanema" (English version)

The English-language adaptation of "Garota de Ipanema" set new lyrics by Norman Gimbel to Jobim's melody, preserving Vinícius de Moraes's original imagery of a girl passing by the sea. Sung by Astrud Gilberto on the 1964 Getz/Gilberto album, it became one of the most recorded songs of the twentieth century. The English version is what carried bossa nova into living rooms far beyond Brazil.
