The March 1964 release of Getz/Gilberto on Verve marked the commercial peak of the bossa nova boom in the United States. Driven by the single "The Girl from Ipanema," the album crossed from jazz audiences into the pop mainstream and sold extraordinarily well for a record of its kind. Its success cemented bossa nova as a permanent part of the international songbook.
