Oscar Pettiford

Bassist Oscar Pettiford carried the bebop revolution into the rhythm section's low end, playing fast, melodic lines that matched the horns and helping lead some of the first bebop groups on 52nd Street. He extended the agile bass approach that the music demanded and later pioneered the instrument's use as a solo voice. He remained a pillar of the New York scene through the 1950s.
